Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps brighten dull skin and fade the look of dark spots, and it backs up your sunscreen against daily environmental stress.
Vitamin C at a glance
- What it does
- Pure ascorbic acid is the most studied form but is unstable and needs a low pH. Derivatives such as ascorbyl glucoside are gentler and more stable, and usually slower.
- Who it suits
- Dull skin, uneven tone and anyone who wants an antioxidant step in the morning.
- Who should be careful
- High-strength ascorbic acid can sting, especially on sensitive skin. It oxidises over time: if a clear serum turns dark orange, it has lost strength.
- AM or PM
- Best in the morning, under sunscreen.
- Don’t layer with
- Retinol and retinal: Best split AM and PM, or on different nights. Use vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night.
- Glycolic and lactic acid (AHA): Best split AM and PM, or on different nights. Both work at a low pH and together they can sting. Use vitamin C in the morning and AHA at night.
- Salicylic acid (BHA): Best split AM and PM, or on different nights. Use vitamin C in the morning and BHA at night.
